How did I found the SALSA Kids Media Club?

Setting up a video club is hard. However, I managed to do it! I don’t think I’ll ever forget what happened. It all started one summer….

How I got the idea of moviemaking

When my mom started volunteering at MATV (Malden’s media station), she told me about a summer program she heard of called KVA—Kids Video Adventure. I was interested in it, like most kids are, since you get to be on TV. However, being on TV isn’t really that surprising to me, but moviemaking is. After I went to that program, I found out I got interested in media! I heard one of the kids there ask Hailey (a teacher and staff) about borrowing the studio (room for making movies) for a movie of her’s. I later found out she makes ten minute movies with her two friends. That idea got me interested. But after a while, I forgot about it.

How I got the idea of a club

I’ve read lots of books, and I liked them. In a bunch of books, such as the BABYSITTERS CLUB, they had a club in it. I’ve always wanted a club, and once I tried to make one. It was a total disaster. I talked to my friend about it, and she didn’t even hear what I said. That was when I gave up trying. However, the idea still lingered in my mind, but I never did get the chance to do something about it. The thought of me being the founder of a club intrigues me, and merely being in a club isn’t enough. After a while, that too, was forgotten.

How they got combined

On day, I got a book out of the library, and it was called something like DO YOU DARE? (For girls). It’s a book about incredible things, such as ‘How to pretend to be a movie star’, or ‘How to pretend a zombie attack’, or ‘How to make the floor seem like a million feet below you’. One of those things was ‘How to make a movie.’ It was nothing like what I experienced in KVA, but it did get the idea started. I started planning out a script. HOW TO BE A MOVIE STAR seemed like a pretty good role in the movie. I wanted a movie star then. HOW TO PRETEND A ALIEN ATTACK was another thing in there, so I decided I wanted that. Soon, with a few more suggestions from the book, I had my first movie.

The night before the filming date, my mom talked to me about making a club. She thinks that since a bunch of my friends are coming here, I should make something continues out of it. She had no idea that I’ve always wanted a club. However, I was immediately reminded of my goal. What a coincidence! This seemed like a perfectly good excuse for starting a club. So, that was how they got combined to form the VIDEO CLUB!!!

Hardships

I faced many hardships in the club some were minor, while some big. I think I judged the size of it by the outcome, which is a mistake, since I got lucky a lot. So, I didn’t realize how big the mistakes were until now, because it all turned out well then. The first hardship, or mistake, was props. I had to get props from MATV, and I thought I’d covered it all. I mean, come on! I spent weeks planning this, and surly it would cover everything?! I was wrong. I’d forgotten to get mirrors. Fortunately, I had some handy around the house, so I was saved.

Another hardship I faced was much bigger than the first. It was the argument of roles. Not only roles in the movie, but also in real life. After the movie was over, I tried to talk to them about making a club. They won’t listen, and was too busy playing a game to listen. Finally, I talked to each of them individually, and in the end called them together. They thought it was a good idea, though the moment I talked about club presidents, the squabbling began.

I think I wanted to be president. Actually, I’m absolutely sure that I have to be president. One reason I wanted to be president is because I know that a lot of others don’t know as much about media as me. Second, I knew that I would treat people very fairly and nicely. I knew because I’ve learned from experience that a lot of leaders command others too much, but I think that a president shouldn’t command people rudely. I’m not sure how I knew that but I just think that the president shouldn’t make others do something they don’t want to do. Other presidents might be unreasonable and say: “Srisha! You’re my best friend, so I want you to be main character.”. However, I won’t voice my opinions and will let the club decide fairly.

Also, and there has to be someone in the club that has to count the votes for vice president or for other decisions. I intended to be that person. As a president, I would be able to make sure that I am that person (Well…I’m kind of commanding others like that….but it’s for the good of the club). , It was because I know that others might laugh when they look at the votes, and tell the people who voted for whom or who voted for who’s idea. That might make the tension in the club stretch, and make other’s feel bad. I’ve had experiences with past student leaders, so I wanted the people to feel friendly with each other.

I had all those reasons, but didn’t say so at first. I wanted to let them support me. Adam immediately called dibs on president. Others thought he shouldn’t be president, but didn’t point to themselves either. They pointed to each other! Srisha definitely thought I should be the president, because I started the club. Good enough! Once the idea has started, everyone saw that it made some sense. So, I became the official president. Now, the argument is on VICE PRESIDENT!

I can’t say a thing in that argument because I’m already president, and I have to follow my own rules (That the president can’t vote or command others). Besides all the others have equal rights to be vice, so I can’t say that Linda (whom I thought would be the best vice) should fill in that role. So, I put it to a vote. In the end, the vote was leaning towards Linda to be president. I was very relieved when that was over. But from that hardship, I knew that fairness is the best strategy.

The rest are just little hardships. I had some glitches here and there, but the experiences are more important.

Experiences

I learned a lot during this time of my life. I got some leadership qualities. Now, when I moved, I’m already trying to get others to respect and listen to me. I know that sometimes, it’s best when I just let others say their opinions before say mine, so that they will be focused and will listen. I also know to say something first, so that my oppositions won’t sway others with their opinions. Those need to be used at different times. I do a big flaw—it’s hard for me to back down when I’ve said something, especially when I know what I said is wrong.

I hope in the future, I can do something with media, and have loyal friends around me. I really liked leading this club, and I think I made it happy for my friends too. It seems like it will have a nice future, just like I hoped it would.
